I Can See My House From Here!

Well, it's Summer, and I hope you all have amazing and fun plans for the weekend.  We are going to have a BBQ on Saturday night, but our REALLY exciting plans are to do....yardwork.  Yay! I say that with all the sarcasm I can muster up in the morning, I'm not that excited.  But, I'm pretty cheap, so we're doing it ourselves.  We aren't doing the fun kind though, we're doing the tedious kind.. removing gigantic bushes so our house doesn't look like the one that the kids say a witch lives in. I'm no witch.  Remember when I shared that we painted our front retaining wall white?
It was a huge change for the better that totally drew our attention to how the front looks from the street.  See how you can't really see our  house at all? Yea, we're gonna need to change that...  The problem is that these bushes are like 20 feet tall, but are luckily hollow. It just takes a long time to do it. I won't bore you with the details of how yard work goes, I'm sure we've all been there.. all I can say though is that it IS worth the sweat...

So here's the before...
Going.... Going...
.......gone!
And that's only ONE of the bushes.... that took all day! Ok, we started at like 2:30, but whatever.  It's not just the trimming that's a pain, it's dealing with the branches you trimmed off.  Oh well, I love that you can see the house, and now we can give these bushes a fresh start and keep them medium sized vs. gigantic.  Plus now we get to fill up the front with fun flowering shrubs.. now THAT'S fun.. (no sarcasm there..)

I made a fun gif of it, my first ever.

Well that's just lovely. Eek, kind of hard to look at... sorry bout that!  So anyway, that's the plan for Sunday - reel in the other two bushes.

***Update 8/26/13: Took care of those bushes.  See the details here.***

What are you doing for the first official weekend of Summer?

Have a great one!

String Art: New Font & Another Giveaway

I'm so happy that I've gotten a chance to really dig into some new designs with the string art! Recently there was the Giraffe, and then before that was that crazy owl... and finally I got the opportunity to do a name tablet in one of my favorite fonts; Market:
Lucky for me the winner of the last giveaway let me run free with the fonts, and I've been itching to do this retro font for a WHILE.  I love how it came out, and her color choices were so complimenting of the font too... very nice.
Finally, now I have an example of this font for when I try to talk people into it! hehe...
Also, for the first time ever, I finished up a state string art.  I had never attempted one of these before, but I'm sure you've all seen them all over Pinterest.  Well, here was my hand at one, this person requested Iowa, and the heart to be in West Des Moines:
I was a little intimidated but it came out pretty nice! She ordered two colors, and I decided to use the gold as a border.

Ok, now I mentioned a giveaway didn't I? Well... my friend Karen from Redoux Interiors is hosting a giveaway for me today! One lucky winner will get their pick of anything in the shop, or any design they can think up for me to try out.  As you can see, I love trying out the new designs!

Hop over to Karen's blog, Redoux Interiors, to enter the giveaway & good luck.  While you're there, browse her site - she's a genius when it comes to finding new life for old furniture, I swear.

Alright my loves, it's back to the strings for me - I have 7 more orders that need to go out this week.  If you are interested in any custom work, please feel free to message me or browse the shop to place an order.  For more string art posts on the blog, click here.

Have a great one!

Front Deck Tour

**Welcome to the Front Deck! You'll find corresponding project links under each photo. Enjoy!**

Whoah... it's mid to late June? Stop it. I feel like I've been going CRAZY with projects lately... I don't know if it's the weather or the coffee I switched to, either way I love it.  I think I'd mentioned before how we were fixing up our front deck, remember the bird feeders? Well I think we're done-ish! I took a breather to get some photos to share, and heads up - most things you see on the deck are projects you can do! Of course...heh..

Here's the best angle:
What do you think? It's so bright in contrast with the forest background.  I know I'd said before that I REALLY wanted to do a large fake grass rug here (you know, the new stuff that's fancy) but it was going to be well over $300. And I'm not ready to spend that on fake grass.....yet. So this IKEA $30 outdoor rug was a much better deal...

I also see making a new fountain in our future (on the left there)... but for now I love the sound.

The deck before was completely empty. It didn't make for very cozy hangouts, but now we're out here all the time. Here's a progress shot actually, from when we first got the patio set:
Oh man those cushions were DRIVING ME CRAZY. So I covered them (with navy blue), since I couldn't find any new ones that I liked.  See how empty the pots are? This was right after I built a few of them, hint hint.... tutorial soon... They were pretty easy.

Here's the view when you first come up the stairs to the deck, from the driveway:
And a lovely close up of the cluster of miscellaneous pots and planters that help close in the back of the patio arrangement:

Isn't that tall plant awesome? It's an "Indian Rhubarb" but isn't edible.  It's also called an umbrella plant, I love it. I had wanted it to be somewhere in the yard to get really large & in charge, but Debby the Destroyer (Our deer visitor) decided she loved it as well.

I scored that orange candle holder at the goodwill - 50 cents! It used to be black. I fixed that...

Here's what I decided to use for little tables. I had been hunting the thrift shops for something I could fix up, but nothing worked. Then at the craft shop one day I saw these crates on sale for $6 each.
They WERE bright and new when I got them, and I knew just the treatment.  Remember the Antique Colorful Crates I posted about a bit ago? Yep. Now I have some too.

The candle holder in the photo above was also a goodwill score. They were missing their glass, and completely covered in gross wax.  Which is probably why no one took them home. They looked about the right size for some IKEA vases I already had, and I figured if they weren't the right size that finding a clear glass vase to fit couldn't be THAT hard, right? Well good thing I grabbed them. After freezing the wax off it was revealed that I had just paid $2 for a set of Pottery Barn lanterns.  Sweet!

Upcycling thrift store salad bowls into succulent planters.  Don't those tiles look like Cheez-its? Mmm...

Here's the view if you're standing on the blue rug, facing the front door (or what has become the front door). Yes I know, we need a new light fixture, but that's what that one on the floor is. Waiting to go up....wanna do it for me?
That rocker came from the goodwill too, it used to be scary looking.  We nicknamed it the Candy Corn Sunrise chair... haha, ridiculous.  I wanted an Ombre fade and when I was done we realized it kind of looked like Candy Corn. Still cool, but definitely candy corn.  I totally ran out of orange paint and had to finish with yellow at the bottom. Ooops... maybe I'll fix it. Maybe I won't.

This table used to be brass colored. I had a hard time changing it, because I DO love brass, but it just wasn't right out here. I loooove the navy! Now I just need the plants to get a move on and make this area look more full & lush. Yes, that's a colander.  Eventually a colander FULL of chives. (grow little babies, grow!)

Pottery Barn candle score #2 and a few upcycled planters...
Strawberries on the way!  Forgive the blurriness...
We grabbed these lanterns from IKEA, they are such a good deal at $3.99, and used extremely strong outdoor double sided tape to secure them to the banister:
I think they ended up giving the patio a Moroccan feel, which was a total accident.  These combined with the bright complementary colors and oops - we had a Moroccan style patio. I'll have to run with that in mind as I fine tune the details here and there. Toss in a little gold, you know the drill.

Oh, then these of course:

You can see more tutorials & tour links in my House Tour section.

So that's our patio! What outdoor projects have you been up to? I'd love to see them.  The warm weather makes me want to be outdoors 24/7. I'm writing this from outside right now... plus this is our first year "in the mountains" which is really only 15 minutes outside of Santa Cruz.  But wow, the weather is amazingly different. I was used to the fog rolling in at a moments notice, and hooded sweatshirts in July...not here. This is so different!

Have a wonderful Wednesday everybody, thanks for tourin' with me.

Paper Crane Obsession

I love paper cranes! Always have.  For as long as I can remember I've incorporated these into my home (or childhood bedroom) decor.  Not only do I love the look of these, but you can make them yourself, they are impressive, oh so angular, and hey - you can literally do any color or pattern.  Did I mention inexpensive? Perfect. Room need a little something here or there? Whip up a team of cranes and throw 'em in a mobile.  Or whip up a garland and string it across a mantle. It's a great way to add fun & color.

I am currently working on a crane project for our living room (update, here it is! Paper Crane Chandelier), but I have a confession. I'm not folding them this time around. As much as I love folding paper cranes, I need about 200-300 for this project and I'm running short on time (isn't that always the case?).  This is where our good friend Etsy comes in.  Look what I found:

Cranes! In BULK. I'm in HEAVEN.  This shop sells folded cranes, straight from Japan, for a fantastic price.  OrigamiYYC has so many beautiful color options.  I ordered 200, and they arrived surprisingly fast for coming all the way from Japan.  I got the dark grey, light grey and white combo shown above.  They are adorable and really well done! I had to share this shop, I'm just so pleased.  Do you realize the mega shortcut this is?!

So on that note, I rusted up some pins that would demonstrate some of the many ideas for uses with cranes. I did a tutorial a while back using cranes to make a Bird Cage Chandelier, which was fun - but now I'm planning a mega chandelier. 200-300 crane mega.... more on that soon.

Here's a few simple garlands, hanging straight down, that add a modern pop of white to this rustic room. So cute:

It's as simple as using a needle and thread.  To get the cranes to stay in place you can tie a few knots in the thread before stringing on the next crane. If you're concerned with it eventually falling through, tie the knot, then string a small bead on.  The bead will sit between the knot and the crane holding it in place. This pin shows the spacing a little better:

How about a backdrop for a party, photo-booth or any accent wall really - incorporate the colors you love:

Cute paper fan-bursts there (is that what they're called?) by the way.  For me, it's all about the lighting. I love lighting. I have to hold myself back from putting a light in every spot in this house, but I mean, look at this thing:

So interesting! I bet at night it casts interesting shadows and shapes all around the room. Perfect mood lighting, right?

Well stay tuned, I've got a clever little diddy in the works using these bad boys, and a HUGE thank you to OrigamiYYC for saving me so much time, I'm beyond happy and impressed. (How do they fold so many!?) ***pssst... I finished! Here is the Paper Crane Chandelier.

Have a great weekend everyone, Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there!

-Jesse
