Spice Rack Update

Remember when I got those old coke bottle boxes? (See this post) Well, I got my jar order in the mail and made the switch last night. I LOVE them:
This free'd up 2 whole shelves in our cabinets. Before, I had just a shelf above the stove that held a few jars of random. I chose blue & teal over the front because I wanted color, but I wanted to keep it old looking. Next up, the kitchen! I'm aiming for the bottom half of the walls a dark turquois-ish color (beach towel), the top half probably a light teal, all with white trim. Then, a bright clover type green on the backsplash, with the bottom row of cabinets being teal, and the top half either the same teal or white. I don't know yet. Throw in yellow accents and a few vintage green shelves, and I should have a pretty colorful kitchen. Wish me luck!

So cute! But I thought that putting spices over the stove makes them go bad faster. Something about the heat...

It does! The heat makes them expire faster...they should be stored away from the heat (& in a dark place if you want them to last even longer).
Deletehmm, guess we'll have to use a lot of spices! haha, really though, I think they'll have a better shot out here in the open, in our kitchen. Because before they were tucked away in a cabinet up high, and the back row would ALWAYS be forgotten. I can't tell you how many times I've re-purchased spices I already had!

ReplyDeleteGenius!!!! :) I'm trying like mad to figure out how I can incorporate this idea into my kitchen... because I swear at the end of our lifetimes we will all have spent DAYS looking through all the spices in search of the one we want! :D You must love the heck out of having them all right there :) Sweet idea!

ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting, is that I never quite finished the labeling of the spices, which isn't a big deal. I've learned to recognize spices by eye, (yes, even the difference between curries.... weird!) as well as smell. I had a few mishaps on the way that just led to interesting dishes, but someday i'll label them.
It's also fun at parties, people stand there, opening the spices and guessing what they are. Guess they had a few too many drinks maybe? haha.

ReplyDeletegreat idea! I was also going to do chalkboard tops so I could label and relabel them, but never did. One thing I have found, storing them over the stove got them pretty sticky. I think these commenter who warned me were right! But in my last house (where these are shown) I had no choice, it was the only place they'd fit. In this current house I actually have another spot for them. I WILL say, that having this many spices visible to me, no matter if it's taboo - hehe - has definitely made me more creative in the kitchen! Where did you guys buy your boxes, ebay?
ReplyDeleteI really love the spice rack but it is true that the heat from the stove will degrade the herbs and spices more quickly. Rule of thumb...cool, dry and dark is always best for storing them. Honestly though...that rack is so wonderful it would be hard to hide. Do you have another wall you can put it on instead?
ReplyDeleteyes actually! I live in a different house now and have since moved them due to everyone's advice! They are still exposed to a little light, but no longer the heat. I guess I didn't really need 48.... but since the option was there.. haha, I had to!
