Remember when I got those old coke bottle boxes? (See this post) Well, I got my jar order in the mail and made the switch last night. I LOVE them:
This free'd up 2 whole shelves in our cabinets. Before, I had just a shelf above the stove that held a few jars of random. I chose blue & teal over the front because I wanted color, but I wanted to keep it old looking. Next up, the kitchen! I'm aiming for the bottom half of the walls a dark turquois-ish color (beach towel), the top half probably a light teal, all with white trim. Then, a bright clover type green on the backsplash, with the bottom row of cabinets being teal, and the top half either the same teal or white. I don't know yet. Throw in yellow accents and a few vintage green shelves, and I should have a pretty colorful kitchen. Wish me luck!
So cute! But I thought that putting spices over the stove makes them go bad faster. Something about the heat...
ReplyDeleteJust a thought! Great job!!!
It does! The heat makes them expire faster...they should be stored away from the heat (& in a dark place if you want them to last even longer).
Deletehmm, guess we'll have to use a lot of spices! haha, really though, I think they'll have a better shot out here in the open, in our kitchen. Because before they were tucked away in a cabinet up high, and the back row would ALWAYS be forgotten. I can't tell you how many times I've re-purchased spices I already had!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this! I want one in my house.
ReplyDeleteGenius!!!! :) I'm trying like mad to figure out how I can incorporate this idea into my kitchen... because I swear at the end of our lifetimes we will all have spent DAYS looking through all the spices in search of the one we want! :D You must love the heck out of having them all right there :) Sweet idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks again Margaret! yea it has been nice having that many spices at hand. I find myself getting more creative.
ReplyDeleteWhat's interesting, is that I never quite finished the labeling of the spices, which isn't a big deal. I've learned to recognize spices by eye, (yes, even the difference between curries.... weird!) as well as smell. I had a few mishaps on the way that just led to interesting dishes, but someday i'll label them.
It's also fun at parties, people stand there, opening the spices and guessing what they are. Guess they had a few too many drinks maybe? haha.
Thanks for the compliments!
Where did you find your awesome jars?
ReplyDeletePlease share where you got your jars. I have a Coke crate that I would LOVE to do this with!
ReplyDeleteCertainly! I got them from a company in Sacramento, sunburst bottle company. Here's the link:

This is so creative! I love it! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!
ReplyDelete~Bliss~
Thank you! I love it too, so handy :D
DeleteWhat size did you use for the jars
ReplyDeleteHi there! Got my jars here: http://www.sunburstbottle.com/?gclid=CJPvnfiT6LECFQIbQgodWCgAQA I don't remember the size, but I just measured my openings and went from there. Good luck!
DeleteDon't know if they would fit but baby food jars could work as well
ReplyDeleteI've been on Pinterest for awhile now, but this is the first DIY that I'm actually doing! I LOVE it SO MUCH!! Just bought the soda cases today, now for the spice jars (which I can't find in any local retail store...?). Thanks for sharing this great idea!!
ReplyDeletegreat! Glad you like the idea! I got the jars from sunburst bottle company online. I believe the link may be in the comments here, but google can help too. They had tons of jar choices, Have fun!
DeleteYou can get the bottle at World Market as well o if you have one in your area - Also Michael's Arts and Crafts and Jo Ann's Fabrics and Crafts - as well.
DeleteI did the same but used the "magnetic-bottom" containers from Wal-Mart, so cool looking!
ReplyDeletegreat idea! I was also going to do chalkboard tops so I could label and relabel them, but never did. One thing I have found, storing them over the stove got them pretty sticky. I think these commenter who warned me were right! But in my last house (where these are shown) I had no choice, it was the only place they'd fit. In this current house I actually have another spot for them. I WILL say, that having this many spices visible to me, no matter if it's taboo - hehe - has definitely made me more creative in the kitchen! Where did you guys buy your boxes, ebay?
ReplyDeleteI really love the spice rack but it is true that the heat from the stove will degrade the herbs and spices more quickly. Rule of thumb...cool, dry and dark is always best for storing them. Honestly though...that rack is so wonderful it would be hard to hide. Do you have another wall you can put it on instead?
ReplyDeleteyes actually! I live in a different house now and have since moved them due to everyone's advice! They are still exposed to a little light, but no longer the heat. I guess I didn't really need 48.... but since the option was there.. haha, I had to!
DeleteThis is awesome and would work great for my hubby's tattoo pigments at his shop.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. My grandfather worked in a Coke factory so besides being functional there's that bit of nostalgia & memories for me. Now to be on the hunt for a vintage coke case. Thanks for sharing where you got your jars from too. Theresa @ DearCreatives.com (I pinned with a link back for future reference & to visit again.)
ReplyDeleteI love what you did but do you wish you had put labels on them where you can see what the spice is from the bottom of the jar? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteFunny you'd mention! I was playing around with so many ideas. I thought, maybe I'll print clear circle stickers and put them on the bottom, and I eventually just put labels on the side as a temporary solution. Now what I'm doing is slowly building my spice collection from Morton & Basset spice company, who uses clear jars that are EXACTLY the same size as these, with labels on the side and on the lid. And they are refillable!
DeleteTotally borrowed your idea. Found my crates at Junkstock (an annual 'antique' festival in Omaha). I got my spices from Penzy and the jars fit perfectly (even the small sample jars because they stand up!)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! That's a great idea, I never thought of putting smaller jars sideways... Guess I'm spice greedy :D
DeleteIn the process of doing this now...I ordered spice jars from https://www.fillmorecontainer.com They had red sifter lids which will look nice with the coke crates.
ReplyDeletegreat, thanks!
DeleteWhat's the diameter of the jars? I'm using small mason jars for my spices and wonder if they would fit. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThey are small jars, actually the exact size or Morton & Basset jars from Safeway...hope that helps!
