Custom Dining Set Update

Hey, It's Monday! Did you end up making that corned beef? We did, and oh-man - it was delicious.  It was totally worth the amount of salt it came with, haha...seriously a years worth in that puppy.  The new cabbage experiment? Totally gonna remember that, it was great.  But anyway...

A long time ago, a little over a year - I started in on a mega dining project that a customer requested.  It was a really fun project and I was excited and flattered that she asked me to do it for her.  We were in communication the whole time, from picking the fabric to scouring craigslist, and it came out great.

Well, I've sold a lot of furniture over the years and it's always SO great to see the furniture in it's new home. Leila was nice enough to send me a picture of the dining set I did for her, staged nicely in her beautiful home:

A lot of things have been going on this week! Sales have been up, and the purple hexagon table was adopted by a couple in San Francisco, and left us on Sunday. I'm glad they liked it! I have two more end tables in the works right now.  Both are square, one I already showed you so here is the other one:

Pretty crazy isn't it....... this one definitely puts up a big challenge. I'm open to ideas! I need a lot of them. I'm definitely thinking solid color, but the panels behind the designs on the doors come off, so I might do them a different color or maybe in a fabric. We'll see. Here's another "beautiful" project I have going, that I have some ideas for but I'm also pretty blocked:

Interesting, right? The problem here is some of the glasses are broken. But, I know something good will come of them. I have 2, this is the big one and I have one more that is smaller. Wish me luck!

Lil' Blue Shelf

I posted a while back about new things I got, (see the post here; Score!) If you look in the back, you can see a little brown shelf. Here it is now:

I really like this blue. I love blue and brown together, because who doesn't anymore, and I thought this original dark brown would be a great color to scratch into. So I painted it, then distressed it to let the brown out. I didn't realize originally, that this shelf is totally free-standing. It can of course go on a wall, but it has no trouble at all standing alone! So glad I painted the back. This project was a really fun one, and I really enjoyed the nice weather I got to work in!This item sold, but you can request something in a similar style. Unfortunately I won't likely have this exact one again! Have a great weekend!

Wine Break

I'm back! Work got a little crazy there, but I won't go into detail because that's about as boring as actually working. Anyway, today I listed the wine rack that I started a long time ago (2 months?). Rain and space set me back a bit, but now that the sun has come out more often, I have found time here and there to sneak outside and get some work done! Here is the finished product:

I love how it came out! I considered doing another color over the top then scratching the surface to let it through.. but I was convinced to leave it as is. Here's what it was before:

Bright n' Fuzzy Speakers

These speakers take me back...  I was looking through my old project pictures and found these babies. Here's a simple how-to on converting a set of mobile speakers into some raver-iffic gear. I used a pair of old speakers that I had from middle school, (12 years ago or so??) and converted them for this auction we had back at the Y when I worked there, for the kids to spend there "bucks" that they earned through good deeds, behavior, homework etc. They were a big hit, so I thought I'd show 'em. You could do this with any of the newer mobile speaker sets, (those ones that fold shut) just keep in mind the open/close function, and glue accordingly. 

So first, I gathered my supplies:

• A mobile speaker set
• Fuzzy balls
• A glue gun & glue sticks
• Sandpaper

Since plastic can be so fickle, I gave the speakers a quick scratch before I started.  Then, after the glue gun was hot, it was just a matter of grab n' glue. Very easy & entertaining, I didn't do them TOO tight together, just enough to make sure you couldn't see the speaker anymore. This set of speakers joins together at their base for some reason, so I did all sides but those, making sure I could still connect them. 15 minutes later, done:

The sound travels through the fuzz balls no problem, and they plug right into anything with a headphone jack. Hope you liked my tutorial, as simple as it was, and be sure to send me your projects!

Cabinet find: Say hello to brown n' blue

So here it is.  Ross saw this little gem peeking out from behind a few other pieces of furniture, and he grabbed it.  I was hesitant at first, but he quickly talked me into the project.  Once we got it home, I KNEW the cabinet was old. The screws, were the kind you need a flathead for....and very brown. Plus, how could that fabric scream anything BUT 70's? Ok, maybe 60's.  Either way, it came apart without too much of a fuss and it was ready for some love. Here is the finished:

  

Brown and blue takes the cake. Well, "espresso" brown and "spa" blue. I always find the names given to paint extremely interesting. It would be fun to see like "Kraft Mac n Cheese Yellow" or something, but I guess it wouldn't sell. hehe.

We ended up giving this one to our friends Kate & Kevin, who just moved back to CA from Chicago, and are in a studio for a while.

The Lounge Chair

When on of our chairs broke, Jen n' Joel went on a hunt with me to get a new one. On our way to the store, we saw this little baby upside down behind some store. Ross had said he wanted a chair with this lounge look, so I knew we had something here. Problem was, I hated the brown sides. Here's a picture during recon, because I forgot to take one before:

Now things got really interesting when I discovered that those arms were plastic. Yep. Plastic. Terrible! They had to be sanded and primed with a plastic primer, but after all was said and done, we got this chair:

It came out great, and it was a recliner! When we moved though, it had to go, because we would no longer have an awkwardly long living room, and the house we moved into just didn't have the space for it. If you are wondering, that's two coats of Robins Egg blue ( if I remember correctly) and then a charcoal wash. I sealed it like 8 times with polycrylic, so that it wouldn't chip. It worked   :)

Chocolate Brown & Robins Egg Blue Bedside tables

Here are the before pictures of the brown & blue bedside tables:

I saved these from a huge yard sale. No one wanted them, but I thought they would make a really neat set if they were repainted. So after a lot of debate, here's what I did:

They sold to a nice young woman from Oakland. Hope they are doing well!
